What is Disability Competency?

In 2006, Sue Palsbo and June Kailes proposed the
"Disability-Competent Health System" model. This type of delivery
system integrates health and social services to maximize
opportunities for independent living and person-centered care.  We
call these models
Disability Care Coordination Organizations, or
DCCOs.  It is based on the better-known Chronic Care Model.

Our approach is an opportunity for the independent living
movement to address health-related issues without subscribing to
the medical model.
